Located in Esher, Surrey, this new contemporary property was designed by Wilkinson King Architects for their client, a surgeon and his family.  Where the previous property was unimaginative and had made little use of light and space, this new building was to maximise the potential of its settings



Set within the well established, mature grounds of the client's former family home, this two storey house is surrounded by large mature trees.  To the front of the building, a full width picture window contrasts against the dark grey brick below.  On the side, the glazed façade of the building opens up the ground floor to the garden seamlessly giving the idea of an infinite space.  A tiered lawn rises steeply above the mirror-like waters of the infinity-edged pool



Inside the house the open-plan ground floor naturally divides into three areas: a family sitting area, a central atrium/dining area and a formal sitting & music area.  A glass staircase in the atrium does not impede the flow of natural light from outside.  Above, on the first floor, a large hallway leads from the atrium through to the five bedrooms, each of the bedrooms designed to offer privacy from surrounding buildings



The clients’ underlying aesthetic requirements were to cause minimal disruption to the strong, clean lines of the architecture.  The resulting lighting design follows this brief.  The lighting is laid out in a strong grid formation with the ground floor and first floor mirroring each other to echo the geometry of the architecture.   Clever use of Lutron control allows the space to change and soften to suit the clients’ lifestyle

Natural daylight also plays a large part in the design of the building - on the ground floor, large glazed walls allow light to flow naturally throughout the space, on the first floor a series a large windows and skylights allow swathes of light but maintain privacy
